Spring Break at the Frio River

Concan is the setting for so many of my fondest memories of growing up. A good portion of my favorite Concan experiences center specifically around Spring Break. There’s something about spring that brings about new life and warmth, both physically and spiritually. After what always ends up being a colder and longer-lasting winter than any of us Texans like, we start spring break vacation with a pep in our step and with fingers crossed that we end up wearing the shorts and tank tops we packed!

The Best Ways to Enjoy Spring Time in Concan

Spring Break in Concan is the true opener for our season. Though the Frio River lives up to its name and runs quite chilly in mid-March, it’s still true soul food to sit in folding chairs by the riverbank arguing about who the REAL Texas Country legends are while sipping your favorite refreshing beverage. I love watching my children ignore the cold and wade in the shallow water to find rocks for skipping or search for good additions to our friends’ collection of “heart rocks”. Another great way to enjoy this transition time in weather is to rent a Frio Premier/Frio Select home with a hot tub or a private pool that can be heated. Then your family can do what mine does and see how many trips we can make from the river to the hot tub and back in a day!

Where to Eat Near the Frio River

Our favorite local restaurants, some of which close down or reduce their hours in the winter, open up again and we rush over, excited to not have to cook for a change. Breakfast at Neal’s Dining Room, burgers from Hippie Chic’s for lunch, ice cream from the Frio Float in the afternoon and tacos from Mama Chole’s just up the road in Leakey will hit the spot!

Attending the Frio River Music Festival

Our showstopper and main event though, is the Frio River Music Festival at the House Pasture Cattle Company restaurant and live music venue (add the House Pasture to your list of fantastic eateries as well!) This is the main draw for most of our spring break travelers about the organizers of this event bring in artists that make us proud to be “Concanians”, Texans, and Americans. The dates for the festival this year are March 16th – 18th, and the lineup features the Randy Rogers Bank, William Beckmann, Charlie Robison, Jason Boland and the Stragglers and William Clark Green, along with several other openers. As part of the festival, at Joe Jimmy’s, another local venue nearby, there will a crawfish boil, a washer tournament, and “wild hog sacking” (trust me, this is something you simply need to see/do/tag yourself doing and seeing on social media ). You can find me there dancing to all the Randy Rogers songs I’ve won or lost love to. Jason Boland will recap all of my travels and their accompanying shenanigans throughout our great state and Charlie Robison will tell stories through song that’ll make life feel beautiful and break my heart all at once.

As of today, we have availability at several beautiful vacation rentals with pools, hot tubs, and other luxury amenities and we’d love to kick off the season with you. Contact us today or reserve a home for spring break today on our website and let me know where to find you in the crowd!
